Stitcheries Class
with Catherine McDonald from Mallee Textiles
This is a fun filled relaxed class for absolute beginners through to experienced embroiderers / quilters. The first hour will see you use a unique piece of fabric to determine the machine quilting lines and machine decorative stitching. Once this is done you put the machine away and we work on the hand stitching. You could almost finish the piece in a day depending on the relaxed chatter and laughter with your fellow stitchers throughout the day. Everyone's piece will be similar but different and unique and you will learn not only from me but also your fellow students. Once finished your piece will look wonderful in a frame although you could use it in any way you like.
TUTOR : Catherine McDonald
From Mallee Textiles in Christchurch
DATE: Monday 18 May 2026
VENUE: Imaculate Conception Hall,
90 Mirianda Street West, STRATFORD
TIMES 9.00am – 3pm
BIOGRAPHY:
My first ever quilt class was at the 1991 Dunedin Quilt Symposium where I started making a traditional quilt but soon moved on to doing my own thing. I love and appreciate all forms of quilting. I make and sell my own hand treated one-of-a-kind fabrics which I also use in my own work. Throughout my quilting career I have been involved in Aotearoa Quilters as President, convenor or co-convenor of 3 quilt symposiums (2003/2017/2026) and current president of Christchurch Quilters. I have been a tutor since 2018 and a judge for many years. I am currently a member of the international group www.clothincommon.com whereby I have to complete a piece every two months. This has helped me develop my own style and direction in recent years. I look forward to seeing you at the Taranaki Exhibition where I am a merchant and/or in this class and hopefully also at the 2026 Quilt Symposium in Christchurch 1 October through 6 October
